One Response to “12 Step Books”

  • Hi Jackie,
I did the slogans at the Mississauga Group the night Lisa spoke (Feb 6, 2011). Lisa has told me a lot about you. I just had my first trip through your site. I remember the book store on Hayden (Yonge and Bloor) in the 12 Step hay-days.

Do you have (have you read) “The 12-Step Buddhist,” by Darrren Littlejohn or “The Skeptics Guide to the 12 Steps (Hazelden) by Philip Z? These are a couple I have read recently.

I am almost done a book of my own. It’s a secular daily meditation book directed at agnostics in the 12-Step community. “BEYOND BELIEF – daily reflections for the 21st century 12-Steper,” is the working title.

I just passed page 300. Each one starts with a quote from a philosopher, author, entertainer, 12-Step literature, political or religious icons, psychologists, and “heard around the rooms” quotes I have collected from 35 years of 12-Step meetings. Like most, I spend a page or less talking about the quotes application to clean and sober living in the popular “we” vernacular. There’s no prayer to cap it off, of course. Direct reference to the 12 Steps draws on a widely used secular version used in agnostic meetings around the world.

I suspect, but I don’t know any stats, that the 21st century newcomer is more spiritual, not religious (likely having no or little formal religious upbringing) and there’s no reason that the “God as I understand him” issue should deter anyone from working the Steps.

I would certainly like to talk shop with you. I know music, but I am new to publishing. I expect the publishing world is about to feel some of the pain the music biz has suffered over the last few decades. Do you sell E-book versions of any of the titles you offer?

If you would like to see some of my manuscript I would be happy to send you or print you the Appendix and a few months worth. I would love to get your feedback. I really don’t know what the size of this market place is or if it’s in a state or expansion or contraction. I have no idea what retail margins are or really anything about publishing and selling books.

My contact info is (MOBILE) 416-239-8737, or omyword@yahoo.com to email me.

    Warm regards,

    Joe C
